The fight to protect greenfield site Barn Elms from major super sewer construction work has received a boost from Thames Water’s public consultation.

The work showed the preferred site for a major tunnel construction shaft was no longer the beloved greenfield site but an alternate brownfield site in Fulham.

Members of the Stop the Shaft (STS) campaign group, who argued the water company should not be placing the shaft site on green public land, said they were relieved to see Barn Elms was no longer the preferred location for major construction work.

STS members were keen to stress though that until work started on Fulham’s alternate Carnwath Road site it was important not to become complacent in case the water company changed its mind again.

Chairman Sian Baxter said: "Thames Water have confirmed the preferred site is Carnwath Road which is a brownfield site and we are very pleased about that as we were always promoting the use of brownfield rather than greenfield sites."

The change of listed preferred site was revealed in the phase two consultation documents released on Thursday, May 17.
