It’s not every day that there’s a world premiere on your doorstep, but that’s exactly what’s happening on Thursday 24 May in Magdalene Hall, Trinity Road, Wandsworth. For the first time ever in the 30+ year history, the Magdalene Players are putting on a brand new play … written by two of their own!
Constituent Parts is set in an errant MP’s constituency office on Election Day. He believes he’s a shoe in to retain his safe seat, but little does he know that this is going to be his ultimate day from hell. Mistresses, mothers and mayhem ensue and the audience are guaranteed an evening of laughter and entertainment watching the Rt Honourable Norman Smythe-Ward MP confront one disaster after another.
The farce is the brainchild of David Ashton and Daniel Hewitt who have previously enjoyed huge writing success with their work in pantomimes performed by the Magdalene Players. Now this is the chance to see their first play appear on stage courtesy of a fantastic cast and crew.
Daniel Hewitt, one half of the writing duo is hugely enjoying seeing his work come to life.
“The most frequent question that we have been asked is, ‘Does it compare to the way you thought or hoped it would be?’. The answer to this is that some bits are exactly as we thought and wanted them to be and some are different. Many of those that are not quite as we thought are for the better, as the cast add visual humour to the lines or deliver lines in a different way. “This production is not about making a show exactly as the writers imagined. It is about taking a script (a good one we hope) and the director, cast and crew working really hard and having a lot of fun bringing it to life. We watch on with excitement and anticipation as the production continues to develop and will watch proudly from the back on the opening night as the cast take Constituent Parts from page to stage.”
Michelle Rea, the director, is relishing the opportunity to bring the work of two great writers (and friends) to life.
“We hit the ground running with rehearsals and I am delighted with the wonderful cast and crew we have drawn together. The atmosphere is superb and everyone has been bowled over by the quality of the script created by two of our own. They all, like me, want to ensure that we do David and Dan’s hard work justice. I have high hopes that we will!”
Constituent Parts will be performed from Thursday 24 May – Saturday 26 May from 7:30pm at Magdalene Hall, Trinity Road, Wandsworth, SW17 7HP. Tickets are £9 (£7 concession) – contact the box office on 07535 925 268 or email www.magplayers.org.uk Based on information supplied by Michelle Rea.
