On January 7th 2012 a group of enthusiastic sports volunteers, 40 dedicated players, 10 teams travelled across London to descend onto Battersea Sports Centre for competing in a 3 on 3 basketball tournament in aid of the charity UNICEF.
The motivation for creating this event was to raise funds and promote awareness UNICEF an organisation who protect the rights of children worldwide. The work of this charity helps to stop children dying from preventable diseases, get children into school and protect children from violence and abuse. 3 on 3 basketball is recreational activity which can bring diverse cultures and people for different together in sport, encourage team spirit, and fair play which are all common themes of our sponsored charity. Fundraising will continue to the end of January, please visit our UNICEF page if you want to recognise our effort: http://fundraise.unicef.org.uk/MyPage/3x3basketball The final of the tournament was contested by Basket Brawlers and Broken Ankles who were both undefeated throughout the earlier stages of the tournament. In a tense final few seconds of the match neither team could be separated with the score at 9-9. In the dying seconds of the match Lere Owakoya drove to the basket and picked up a foul as the clock run down to zero. After composing himself he stepped up, made the free throw, and won the tournament for his team and deservedly picked up the MVP award for his efforts.
This was a perfect end to a perfect day sport.
