If you’re a fan of Roald Dahl's The Twits, then you’re going to love this new afternoon tea completely inspired by it.
Currently on at The Marriott Hotel at London’s County Hall, just a stone's throw from The London Aquarium and the newly opened Paddington Experience, you’ll find a new The Twits afternoon tea completely inspired by this much loved 80s classic children’s book.
The hotel has turned one of its lounge rooms into an immersive parlour inspired by the gruesome twosome – Mr and Mrs Twit – for their newly launched afternoon tea this year.
The tea has been created to feature sweet and savoury treats inspired by the characters, and you’d think that such treats would be rather unappetising, but quite the opposite.
The treats came presented in a cage like the one Mr Twit has in the book, and included a selection of treats inspired by Mr Twit, Mrs Twit and the animals who rebel against the terrible pair.
The savouries included a selection of things that you’d find in Mr Twit's beard , with names like ‘Maggoty Green Cheese and Mouldy Cornflakes‘ and ‘Wormy Spaghetti‘.
We first began with a ‘Bird Pie’, like the one Mrs Twit bakes in the book, which consisted of chicken, ham and leek, and it was delicious with so much flavour and a really lovely flaky pastry.
This was followed by ‘Wormy Spaghetti’ made with cucumber worms, cream cheese and wholemeal bread, and ‘Scrambled Egg’ consisting of scrambled egg with brown egg mayonnaise, which served as fun spins on traditional afternoon tea sandwiches.
Finally, we finished off with a ‘Fish Finger’, which was a brioche bun with smoked haddock and ketchup, as well as ‘Maggoty Green Cheese and Mouldy Cornflakes’ arancini with orzo, cheddar and chive.
What I liked about this afternoon tea was the mix of savouries on offer, which deviated from the traditional finger sandwiches route and were definitely some of the best savouries I’ve had at an afternoon tea.
They also had a good selection of teas as well as coffees, wines and cocktails, and even some Twits-themed drinks including a ‘Skillwigger Lemonade’ with frogspawn made from apple pearls and a ‘Roly-Poly Berry Juice’ from the kids menu, which we sampled and were both very good.
The scones were a bit more contemporary, tributing Mrs Twit and her proclivity for tricks, with one buttermilk scone with jam and cream, and one marmite scone served with cream cheese and chive.
This was definitely the tensest part of the afternoon tea, rather like the feeling you get when trying to avoid a coffee Revel.
I will say the flavour of the marmite was quite mild, so I would recommend trying before committing your toppings to each one.
We finished off with a trio of sweet treats inspired by the heroes and heroines of this tale – the animals – first starting with a ‘Jam Roly-Poly Bird’ cake, which was a vanilla and raspberry Swiss roll topped with white chocolate.
This was followed by the ‘Muggle Wumps’ brownie with monkey nuts and banana, which was very rich and decadent and definitely the richest out of all three.
Finally, we had the ‘Fizzy Drinks’, which was a citrus lemon and orange macaroon with popping candy.
This afternoon tea has been very cleverly created to capture the spirit of this much-loved children’s book, whilst making everything delicious and appetising, not an easy feat with a book like The Twits.
There was so much attention to detail, from the menus to the artwork on the walls, and even the little living room area complete with Mr Twit’s beard and wormy spaghetti props with armchairs to pose in.
The Twits Afternoon is priced at £65 for adults and £45 for children, with a 30 percent discount running over October half term.
Slots can be booked from 12pm to 4:30pm up until December 30 – and you’d be a Twit to miss it.
