A flood alert has been issued for riverside areas of south west London following heavy rainfall this weekend and today.

A flood alert has been issued by the Environment Agency for the Tidal Thames area from Putney Bridge to Teddington Weir as a result of spring tides and increasing river flows.

Where the alert is in place

The flood alert covers the following area:

  • Putney Embankment (SW15)
  • Chiswick Mall and Strand on the Green (W4)
  • Thames Bank at Mortlake (SW14)
  • Ranelagh Drive (TW1)
  • Friars Lane and Water Lane (TW9)
  • Riverside and The Embankment at Twickenham
  • Towpath below Teddington Lock

According to the agency, flooding is expected to impact low-lying roads and footpaths, which could last up to two hours, although flooding of properties is not expected.

Further rainfall is expected, with a yellow weather warning in place for large parts of south England in place until 11:59pm today (September 23).

Currently the flow at Teddington Weir is “above normal” for this time of year, at 36 cubic metres per second, and is continuing to increase following recent rainfall.

The Environment Agency advised that it was closely monitoring the situation.
