Today (August 12) London is set to have what could be the hottest day of 2024 so far, with temperatures potentially reaching highs of 34 degrees.

This tops the hottest recorded temperature this year in London in July, which reached a high of 32 degrees.

These hotter conditions come following tropical Storm Debby, which has strengthened the jet stream, bringing hot air to the UK over the late weekend into Monday.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Dan Holley, said: “We expect to see a relatively brief hotter and more humid spell of weather for Sunday and Monday, before these hotter conditions recede on Tuesday, allowing more unsettled conditions to return.

“This change to hotter conditions is caused, in part, by the effects of Tropical Storm Debby in North America. Debby is helping to strengthen the jet stream, causing it to meander over the Atlantic. This will allow hot air over France to move into the UK later this weekend, and early next week.”

Temperatures will begin to increase during the morning, already starting from an overnight high of 20 degrees, and climbing into the 30s by 12pm.

Monday is expected to remain clear and sunny for the entire day and leading on into Tuesday, before temperatures begin to cool again mid-week.

Some places could hear the odd rumble of thunder, with thunderstorms expected by the late afternoon, bringing generally warm and humid conditions overnight.
