Tesco have created what is set to be its first public-facing store with cashierless technology, meaning customers can 'just walk out' without paying at a till.
The supermarket giant has been trialling a new cutting edge system which sees items automatically added to a digital shopping basket
And a Tesco Express store in central London has just reopened following a refurbishment equipped with new technologies, with more stores promised in the coming months and years.
Whilst the new technology is not yet up and running, new pay gates and ceiling cameras have been installed, making the High Holborn Express destined to be the company's first public-facing 'Just Walk Out' store.
Computer-vision powered technology will be used to support the checkout-free retail experience, converting existing stores so customers can enter, select which items they want and pay on their device and leave the store.
Tesco opened a Trigo-powered version of Amazon's Just Walk Out technology as part of a trial for staff at its headquarters in Welwyn Garden City in 2018.
According to Retail Week magazine which reported on the store changes, the technology is not yet operational but “it is destined to be the first public-facing Tesco store equipped with its Trigo-powered version of Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology”.
This year tech giant Amazon has opened a number of till-free convenience stores in London. Shoppers can scan a smartphone app to enter, pick up goods, and walk away. Shortly after they get an email receipt and are be billed from their Amazon account.
