Putney school pupils have rolled up their sleeves to help clean up our local commons.
Year 12 students from Putney High School assisted the conservators on Wimbledon Common last week, by clearing scrub to preserve a rich area of wildlife.
The initiative is part of a community activities week, which has seen students from Years 7, 8 and 9 try their hand at litter picking for the big "Spring Clean" project in Roehampton and West Putney.
The School’s Headmistress, Suzie Longstaff, said:
“Roehampton Community Week has provided a great focus for Putney’s many local partnership projects. The students have enjoyed rolling their sleeves up and doing something really practical to improve the local area.
“Teams of Year 7, 8 and 9 pupils have been out litter-picking in Wandsworth and Roehampton, and Year 12 biologists enjoyed their “bushwhacking” sessions with the conservators on Wimbledon Common, which had the added advantage of teaching them about encouraging a diversity of natural habitats.”
“At Putney we have the belief that when it comes to social responsibility, “It starts with me”. Rather than just talking about change we encourage our students to look at the positive difference they can actively make as individuals. Roehampton Community Week and other initiatives like it are a great example of the impact we can have when we come together as a community.”
