Wandsworth now has one of the highest Covid-19 infection rates of any London borough with hundreds of new cases confirmed in recent days.

According to Public Health England (PHE) data, 376 new Covid-19 infections were confirmed in Wandsworth in the seven days up to June 10.

That was an increase of 170, or 82.5 per cent, from the previous week's figure.

The borough's 'rolling rate' of new infections stood at 114.1, one of the highest of any borough in London, and significantly higher than the UK-wide average of 72.8.

The rapid spread of the highly infectious Delta variant forced the government to postpone ending restrictions in the UK recently, and PHE London have consistently warned Londoners of the risks posed by the fast spread of the variant.

Last week Wandsworth Council also warned residents in the borough over the rise in new infections, which they said was concentrated in the 18-30 age bracket.

Responding to a request from the Wandsworth Times regarding the latest data as of Wednesday, June 16, a spokesperson for Wandsworth Council said:

"The council is responding to the rise in infection rates through a co-ordinated plan which includes targeted communication through a range of channels including social media and through our weekly e-newsletter to local residents.

"This includes messages on how to stay safe through testing, vaccination and hands, face, space messages."

Previously (June 10) the council urged residents to pull together after their success in controlling a previous outbreak of the 'South African' variant of coronavirus.

"Back in April, Wandsworth residents were fantastic in coming forward for surge testing to prevent the spread of COVID-19 variants and tens of thousands of people have already had their first and second COVID jab.

"It’s really important that we don't waste the progress already made," said Wandsworth’s Director of Public Health Shannon Katiyo.

"If you are meeting other people, take a test first, follow all social distancing rules and as soon as you are offered the vaccine, take it.

"If we all pull together now we can stop the situation getting worse."
