An aspiring firefighter has trekked from Tooting to Brighton to raise money for a cause close to his heart.
Joseph Mallon, 19, took on the 46-mile feat in aid of the Fire Fighters Charity, which supported him after he lost his mother and baby sister in a flat fire in 2009.
Tara-Jane Mallon, 35, and Phoebe Tuck, 3, were tragically killed in a blaze started by a candle at their second-floor flat in Earlsfield.
Joseph was 8 years old at the time and has been inspired to become a firefighter since.
“The London Fire Brigade do amazing things in the community, and I’ve always wanted to help those less fortunate and in need,” he said.
Despite being diagnosed with epilepsy last year, Joseph still has his sights set on joining the force.
“It might take me a bit longer to join the Brigade, but I’m staying on top of my fitness, eating healthily and taking the right medication,” he added.
His 46-mile hike took him across towns and long stretches of country road, walking from sunrise to sunset.
“My blisters kicked in halfway which was really challenging but when I got to Brighton I felt so much relief. I immediately went to dip my feet in the sea,” he said.
His girlfriend, Rheanna Newbury, was waiting at the finish line and watched him “power on throughout the agony.”
“I was really surprised but proud, there were tears in my eyes because I know that he’s been through a lot as a child losing his mum and sister,” said the 18-year-old.
Joseph raised £340 for the Fire Fighters Charity which helps everyday heroes of the UK fire community who are injured, ill or in need of psychological support.
