A doctor from Putney has decided to go the extra mile or - 50 - and take part in Prostate Cancer UK’s virtual challenge Run the Month.
Mathew Hobbs, who is the Director of Research for Prostate Cancer UK, aims to run the staggering distance in April.
The 39-year-old is raising money to beat prostate cancer, a disease that kills one man every 45 minutes.
Money raised will fund research for life-saving treatments and provide practical support to men and their families affected by prostate cancer.
The keen runner has already completed several marathons in charity colours, and he will be spurred on in April by a team of fundraisers.
Since the Covid-19 pandemic began, the group has raised a remarkable £4 million through virtual events including running, cycling and walking.
Dr Hobbs said: “I've been working at Prostate Cancer UK for more than seven years now and the money and awareness raised by our fantastic supporters makes an enormous difference to so many men and their loved ones.
“The impact of the coronavirus crisis over the past 12 months has meant our life-saving research has been at huge risk. Sadly, the impact of prostate cancer, now the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the UK, is no less devastating.
“Men have never needed support more than now to protect that crucial research into better tests and treatments so we can stop prostate cancer being a killer.”
“Our work is a marathon, not a sprint, and that’s why events like Run The Month makes such a massive difference. Its why I’ll be lacing up my trainers in April.
