Tooting’s former Police Station will have a new residential use, after it was acquired by a leading property developer for £8.25mil.
Telereal Trillium announced the purchase of the site on Mitcham Rd yesterday (March 23).
The Police Station closed in October 2020, as part of the Metropolitan Police’s Estate Transformation programme.
The 0.85-hectare property has two connected buildings, the former Police Station, which was constructed in 1939, and Section House which was added shortly afterwards.
Both buildings were designed by famous architect, Gilbert MacKenzie Trench, who is best known as the creator of the iconic Doctor Who Tardis.
The developers say the property will be refurbished “sensitively” – keeping the Art Deco façade and entrance, balconies and stone banding in tact.
Telereal Trillium said new homes will make a welcome addition to the residential area, given its proximity to transport links at Tooting train station, Tooting Broadway and Tooting Bec underground stations.
Duncan Brisbane, Development Director at Telereal Trillium, said:
“This is an exciting opportunity for us to deliver a landmark scheme in the heart of one of south London’s most popular areas. Traditionally, Telereal Trillium has concentrated on development opportunities within our own portfolio.
“However, we are increasingly keen to identify new sites such as this, where our development team can apply its substantial experience and expertise to add value and bring vacant buildings back into long-term use.”
