Woman evicted from Putney home after 50 years

Ann-Maria Davies, who was born in the Putney High Street flat in 1962, believes she is one of her road’s longest residents.

Her parents leased the property before her and she took over when they died.

There she established most of her adult life, raising two children, marrying and looking after numerous dogs.

But in September she was hit with an eviction notice ordering her to move out in six months.

Mrs Davies says she has always been a “good tenant”, paying rent on time and refurbishing the kitchen and bathroom over the years.

But under Section 21 a landlord does not have to give any reason for asking a tenant to leave.

Now, the 58-year-old fears her life will be “worthless,” with decades of memories gone.

“My whole life is in Putney, all my friends and doctors are here. When I move I won’t know anyone.

“I thought I would live in this property until the day I die,” she said.

Mrs Davies attended school in Putney and walks every day in Wandsworth Park. She says the prospect of moving has taken a toll on her mental health.

“Because of the pandemic I can’t even say goodbye to my fantastic community. I’m putting on a brave face but I’m heartbroken."
