There’s the Chelsea Flower Show, famous for its avant garde show gardens and then there’s its less reserved ‘alternative’ younger brother south of the river.

The Chelsea Fringe returns to Nine Elms, Battersea and Vauxhall from Saturday (May 20) until June 4 with everything from guerrilla gardeners to community projects, talks, walks and installations.

Chelsea Fringe founder and director Tim Richardson said: “It's fantastic that Nine Elms is participating in the Fringe again this year.

“The spread of events - walks, workshops, art events and community garden activities - is a good reflection of the overall spread in the Chelsea Fringe, making this a mini festival within the festival.”

Swathes of former industrial land in Nine Elms will turn green to create Nine Elms Park while private land becomes public open space and the Thames River Path is opened up.

Most of the Chelsea Fringe events are free, though some require booking, and they include the Incredible Edible Lambeth Walk and the educational Planting party with Father Nature.

Wandsworth Council leader and co-chair of Nine Elms Vauxhall Partnership, councillor Ravi Govindia said: “Nine Elms has such a strong horticultural heritage, with our history of market gardens and as the home of New Covent Garden Market – the largest wholesale fruit, vegetable and flower market in the UK. So it’s always a delight to celebrate our roots through supporting Chelsea Fringe and supporting our green-fingered local communities.”
