Growhampton has recently been successful in a bid for a grant of £15,000 from Wandsworth Council.
We're all very pleased because it means we're going on tour! We're going to go on a roadshow, delivering 30 hours’ of free growing, sustainability and healthy eating sessions at schools in the borough.
Sessions will be made available to both primary and secondary schools and youth groups. Depending on the school's requirements the sessions will involve teaching children how to plant, grow and cook their own food, as well as incorporating healthy eating advice, and following parts of the National Curriculum.
These programmes will be solely run by Roehampton student volunteers, under the guidance of the Growhampton team. This will provide student volunteers with an excellent opportunity to develop their employment and teaching skills as well as developing connections with local schools.
Student volunteers will be trained by the Growhampton team in order to deliver sessions and will, themselves, expand their knowledge of how to grow their own produce.
We're hoping to reach over 900 local people with this programme and to increase awareness in healthy eating and ease of growing. We'll be demonstrating how to grow your own produce within an urban area and in small spaces.
