Man, woman and dog can team up as part of the UK's first such obstacle and mud run event.

Paws and pegs will pound the ground on a 2.5km or 5km course, crawling under nets, jumping tyres and getting thoroughly covered in mud, possibly something the canine sidekicks may enjoy more.

Competitors have the option of running with their dog in a team or on their own for the event to help Battersea's Dogs and Cats Home.

A range of fun activities for the whole family in addition to stalls to buy refreshments and some doggy treats.

Dogs signed up to the challenge will get a bandanna to proudly wear on future walks, while the human participants will get a T-shirt, medal and goody bag.

Claire Horton, chief executive at Battersea, said: "The Muddy Dog Challenge is a first for the UK, a first for our supporters and first for dogs and we are excited to invite runners and their dogs from all walks of life to join us for this unique event.

"I will be running with my German shepherd, Simba, and we cannot wait to make a splatter. Best of all, the money raised through sponsorship will help to care and re-home thousands of our lost and abandoned dogs and cats, helping to give them a much needed second chance in life.

"Getting muddy has never been so good."
