Large parts of Balham and Tooting are set to become 20mph zones.
Following a consultation, residents have backed proposals to curb vehicle speeds in their streets.
The new speed limit will apply to all roads in Balham’s Bedford ward and the Furzedown area of Tooting.
The overall cost of making the change, including signage, is approximately £120,000.
Transport spokesman, Councillor Jonathan Cook, said: “This has been a great example of local democracy in action.”
Tooting MP Sadiq Khan said: “I am delighted that after years of campaigning 20mph speed limits are finally coming into force across Furzedown and parts of Balham and Tooting Bec.”
