On December 20, 1909, department store worker George Neighbour heroically gave his life to save two female colleagues caught in a huge blaze opposite Clapham Junction station.
His sacrifice has been immortalised with a plaque at Battersea Arts Centre, and as part of the historic building’s 120th anniversary the venue, working with the Wandsworth Guardian, is calling for 12 more Good Neighbours of the area to be commemorated.
Battersea Arts Centre, that started life as a town hall, will, each week, be profiling every decade since 1890 to provide inspiration, and in September a panel will select the 12 worthy winners.
Associate artistic director Sarah Golding said: “George Neighbour’s actions that day sum up our historic town hall’s ongoing spirit – an everyday man who, at a critical point, chose bravery and selflessness for the greater good of others.
“We now want to mark the 120th anniversary of this historic building by celebrating 12 other unsung heroes from Battersea’s past and present who, like George, deserve recognition for their contribution to our community.”
Researchers can also visit online archive bacarchive. org.uk that includes material from the Wandsworth Heritage Service, and uncover people to nominate.
To nominate someone, fill out a nominations card and drop it off at the centre or Battersea library, or visit the nominations page at bac.org.uk/ourgoodneighbours.
