I wonder how many Southfields residents share my view that the attempts of the council to calm the traffic could be far more effective if instead of the very numerous road humps speed cameras or speed warning lights would be much more acceptable.
I do know that most people I speak to think that we have an excess of humps.
I also know that most people think they are largely ineffective allowing, as they do, large vans etc. to drive at any speed they like while normal smaller cars have to slow down and still cause the driver's back teeth to rattle.
Last week I followed a cement mixer (enormous and capable of ten times the damage I could cause) up Wimbledon Park Road.
Of course he didn't have to slow down at all, so he didn't.
One wheel in the gutter, 40-50 mph, thank goodness there weren't any children playing on the pavement.
Without the humps he could have driven nearer the middle of the road and not risked their lives.
If we don't have a grown up discussion about the problem, from now until eternity cars will be bouncing over humps and vans will be speeding with one wheel in the gutter.
And people like me will be cursing the authorities and shock absorber manufacturers will be smiling all the way to the bank.
Maybe some lives will be saved but equally some ,possibly more, will be lost.
