We were delighted that Wandsworth Council has voted to explore extra protection for The Wheatsheaf pub under planning laws.
The cross-party vote in the committee also committed the Council to reviewing how it can better protect pubs across the borough.
We are also extremely grateful to all the local residents who contacted us and have supported the campaign.
We can all cite examples of much loved community pubs that could come under threat for development into supermarkets or flats.
While we need to house London’s growing population, and the current baby boom suggests that pressure will only grow, we need to recognise that local authorities should act to help shape our neighbourhoods as attractive places to live with real community assets.
A good pub, such as The Wheatsheaf, is central to the community it serves and deserves some extra protection if possible under planning law.
