Freedom Works UK Director Chris Hayes explains why he is passionate about ‘Be Free!’, Freedom Works’ coaching and peer support programme for people impacted by anxiety and depression.

‘Be Free!’, previously ‘Freedom Workshops’ when I first attend them in 2010, is the programme of work that transformed my life from someone who was incredibly shy and nervous in social situations and impacted by anxiety and depression in the work place into someone who is no longer stopped in life. Now I’m running my own business, leading workshops, and standing as a local politician.

The anxiety hasn’t gone away and in fact continues as my life expands and I find myself in new and challenging situations, but I am no longer stopped by it and I have trained myself to be free from all the negative stories and conversations about it and me: “There’s something wrong with me”, “I’m not good enough” etc.

Now I’m coaching others to do the same. I will be leading my third series of ‘Be Free’ starting in November in Clapham, South West London. It is a great feeling when you know that your actions are freeing people from anxiety and depression in the workplace, and also challenging the stigma attached to these issues. This is something I am passionate about.

‘Be Free!’ is our recommended coaching and peer support programme that empowers people in work and business, and students of higher education to manage their confidence and be free from the constraints of shyness, social anxiety, low self esteem and depression.

It is an intensive 10 week programme consisting of one-to-one and group coaching, acting and role play, homework between sessions, peer support, weekly conference calls, social events, and very powerful useful tools which can help you to deal with issues arising from social anxiety in your daily life so that you are able to be powerful in the face of those issues.

“I found the group to be very humbling,” reflects Sanjit, a student who completed the programme and went on to create a New Year’s Eve social event for people impacted by anxiety.

“To meet people who have gone through similar experiences makes it really easy to connect with people and we gain strength from each other that our anxiety will not cast a dark shadow over our lives and that right now in this moment we can choose to be free of our social anxiety."

The next series of Be Free! starts on Thursday 15 November, 19.00 – 20.30 at St Barnabas Church, Clapham Common Northside, London, SW4 9SW.
