Call the Midwife final hints at emotional twist for Trixie

In first-look pictures released by the BBC, Nurse Trixie, played by Helen George, seems to look for help through prescribed drugs from Dr Turner, played by Stephen McGann.

It comes after Trixie and her husband Matthew, played by Olly Rix, were facing growing financial concerns after he was cut off from the family business.

Episode seven saw Matthew find a hopeful solution to their money situation after he was advised by his friend Chester to buy two warehouses in New York as the property market in the American city seems to be on the rise.

However, the decision came at a cost, forcing Matthew with no choice but to move to the Big Apple straight away, taking his son Jonty with him.

Trixie chose to stay behind in Poplar but now on her own, it seems she might be struggling to handle everything.

Call the Midwife hints at an emotional final with Trixie

Trixie had previously faced alcohol addiction but has since become a recovering alcoholic following help from midwives at Nonnteus House and Alcoholics Anonymous.

Now in first-look photos from the BBC for the final of Call the Midwife, one image shows Trixie pouring a pile of pills into her hand whilst in a nurse uniform.

Elsewhere, Trixie's brother Geoffrey seems to make his return to Poplar in an attempt to support his sister with a bottle and cheese in hand.

The official plot for the final of Call the Midwife series 13 reads: "Miss Higgins receives an unexpected visitor, and Sister Monica ruffles feathers. Poplar votes for its Mother of the Year."

Discussing their final scenes on Call the Midwife together, Rix described the day as moving, sharing that it was "genuinely very moving on the page, and it was something we found quite emotionally exhausting to do".

He added "And they were hard, really hard to work on. We have this set of Matthew's flat, Matthew and Trixie’s flat, which is quite a small set.

"And we're just in these four walls, and often our scenes would be programmed to be filmed in one day, so there's a sort of pressure on the finality of it all, as well."
